This picture, taken in February 1954, gives a look inside the Allen Korns family farm house in Southampton Township, Somerset County PA, where John Wilson Korns, and Daniel Korns, Jr. resided before him. Gladys (Bittner) Korns is holding the grandson that grew into the founder of this web site; L. Dietle. Gladys is sitting in the kitchen, and through the doorway we see the living room; note the traditional Bible and cross door panel construction.
The dog's name was "Teenie," and she was the first dog I can remember. She is also the subject of a bluegrass squirrel hunting song I wrote called "Teenie Dog." My first cousin W. Korns told me that:
Teenie was ordered from somewhere, possibly the midwest, to help keep rats out of the barn.
Teenie chased squirrels around to Allen's side of the tree so he could shoot them (W. Korns told this to me when I was still very young, and then he reaffirmed the story in 2026.)
Teenie slept in the pantry of the farmhouse at night (The pantry was located next to the kitchen, near the stairs).
Teenie broke one of her hind legs while chasing a rat in the barn, and never regained use of the leg. This was back before the farm had a hay baler, so there was loose hay stored in the hay mow. In order to help keep the lower section of the barn warm for the cows, the hay-dropping hole in the threshing floor had been covered with loose hay. Teenie broke through the loose hay while chasing a rat, and fell to the concrete floor below. When I was little, W. Korns advised me to stay away from the hole so I didn't fall through it.
I have included a lightened portion of the view through the doorway, so that the living room view is clearer.
