Transverse view of the house on the Michael Korns, Sr. farm after partial collapse

Transverse view of the house on the Michael Korns, Sr. family home, Southampton Township, Somerset County, PA.

This is a 1999 photograph of the collapsed end of the old farmhouse on the Michael Korns, Sr. Somerset County PA family farm. The photo shows the traditional Cross and Bible paneled door construction. It also reveals that the downstairs room at this end of the house was quite large; note the uninterrupted length of the chair rail. The crude railing on the second story was placed there at one time to permit the safe use of the house as a "haunted house" at Halloween; apparently the second story flooring over the large room was unsafe or missing at the time. Note that the passageway to the second story room at this end of the house was located at the front of the house. Also note the roof construction; the last roof on the house was "tin". Note fragments of a plastered and lathed wall in the attic, which indicates that the attic was at least partially finished, which seems a bit unusual. One plausible guess might be that such a room in an attic might have been finished out as a room for hired labor.
